Stuart Smith | Vebiz
Vebiz is a specialised grants consulting firm, who help pinpoint the right grant program for you and simplify the process. Vebiz have helped many fashion businesses take advantage of grant funding, particularly through the Export Market Development Grant (EMDG). At the session, Stuart broke down the EMDG and explained how businesses can be reimbursed for their international market promotion.
EMDG KEY POINTS
EMDG | The grant is administered by Austrade and offers a 50% reimbursement of your international marketing expenditure, with funding up to $150,000.
ARE YOU ELIGIBLE? | You must be an Australian entity trading goods/services, with a turnover of <$50M and a minimum international marketing spend of >$15K (this is across two years for your first claim). The only international markets exempt from including in your claim are New Zealand and North Korea. You must also demonstrate your capacity to export and have a product/service available for sale, not just a concept. Austrade require substantiation of marketing activities including financial and legal documentation - Vebiz has a system that enables this to be easily met. Austrade terms and conditions vary from year to year. Vebiz will keep you up to date with changes to grant entry requirements.
WHAT DOES IT COVER? | International marketing expenditure is on most export promotional activities; this includes, overseas representation, marketing consultants, marketing visits, communications, free samples (these are different to fashion ‘samples’ - this only includes samples given away without expectation of return), trade fairs and promotional events, promotional literature and advertising, overseas buyers brought to Australia, and intellectual property protection.
BEFORE YOU CLAIM | Consider these points: how you will distribute; international tariffs (these can be complex); your marketing focus (trade show, fashion show, agent, representative); what can you handle (boutique, department store, chain); know the culture of the market; costings and exchange rates.
CLAIMING | Your first claim for the grant can be based on two previous financial years, with claims after this being administered on a yearly basis. Lodgement of your claim is made after the end of the financial year and must be put in between July 1st and November 30th, with payment generally 8 weeks after audit.
